As I am a first time political candidate, this website section is necessarily (in my view) a work in progress.
That humans from an early age have opinions and biases seems to me a given, however much we may debate if they are determined by genes or experiences. Two weeks this past February spent helping care for my 3 year old cousin reminded me of this reality, just in case I had forgotten the same lesson learned caring for her as a newborn. However, I hope that in my seventies I am a little more open to hearing alternative opinions than a typical “I-do-it-my-way” two to four year old and I believe that as a political representative it is most important that I be so.
As a political Representative it must be my obligation to represent diverse constituents as best I can with the goal of building a positive future for us all. To do this I need to have in mind and understand the range of views in my district and particularly to hear and understand the reasons for such beliefs and opinions. It is commonly observed that statistics can be made to support any opinion, but, in my experience, looking at the data from a range of reputable sources generally leads in a direction that is positive for many who hold diverse opinions. This is a hard working process, requiring generous listening and a willingness to think flexibly about one’s own preconceived opinions. To be authentically present in dialogue, to listen and learn, is my first commitment as a candidate. I expect my opinions to evolve and to write more here as I study and hear more about the issues most important to the residents of Montana House District 85.
I would add that I am not referring here to core values; as an individual and as a candidate, I am committed, for example, to being honest, truthful and respectful of the legal rights and opinions of others.
What I am focused on to start with:
- Best practices to secure and sustain Public and open lands for the long term benefit of all.
- Providing reasonable and affordable health care for all Montanans.
- Insuring excellent educational opportunities and support services for all our children.
